Decoding the can-can Bridal Lehenga trend

What is Can-Can Bridal Lehenga?

Bridal Lehenga has been in fashion ever since mogul rule and ideal outfit for every indian bride even today. Brides in india or overseas of indian origin always opt for a Can-can bridal lehenga for one or more of their wedding functions. Over the years the bridal lehenga has been having its versions in terms of style statement and the current one being the “CAN-CAN BRIDAL LEHENGA”

Can-Can bridal lehenga is nothing but a multi kali bridal lehenga with flare and lot of crushed net and underwire that gives the lehenga its volume and circle effect at the circumference. Its very similar tot he victorian ball gown look with an under wire petticoat.

What body types does the can-can Bridal Lehenga suit

The can-can bridal lehenga suits almost every body type, if made correctly. The flare of the skirt needs to be decided according to the body type. Slimmer the body the bigger the flare. The second most important things is the number of wire gauge that adds the flair to the skirt. Ideally it should move out from the waist to the floor. More like a mountain going bigger towards the base. Aesthetically this looks more classy and even more glamorous for any bride wearing the same.

What functions does the Can-can lehenga compliment?

This type of lehenga is ideal for any stage function, like engagements, cocktails or a grand fairy tale wedding reception. Many people think that can-can lehenga won’t let you dance but this is completely false. Infact these lehenga’s are completely comfortable and make it easy to move about and dance in them. Attached is a picture of beautifully done up purple “can-can bridal Lehenga”. This particular one in the picture below is made for a grand wedding reception.

Hi Mandy. it will be difficult to sit in the gurdwara with can can lehenga, specially if its heavy can can as if you sit down the can can being stiff will sit up. I wouldn’t recommend a can can lehenga for gurdwara fears and wedding.but you can opt for a detachable crinoline for the lehenga, during feras you can remove it and after the wedding when u come to the wedding hall to greet guests you can reattach it with the help of your stylist.

Hi Shruthi, You cannot have a detachable can can made that sits under an already stitched up lehenga.
If you do wish to have a detachable can can, the main lehenga has to be stitched in sync with the Planned detachable can can.

My lehanga has a can-can of hard net. And I need to sit on floor during the wedding. what if i remove the can-can. will the lehanga look bad without can-can ? i’m confused what to do now..

lehenga will fall flat and will loose shape if not stitched with a proper pattern. This generally will happen if you have got your outfit from ready made store! incase you have bought it as a bespoke made to measure lehenga from any reputable brand/designer it shud be fine incase you remove the can can. as the measurements will be in sync with your hips and length and shud look good.

I already have a medium heavy net zari worked lehenga.can i use a can can in it? Also from where can i find it..is it possible to purchase it online?

HI Swetlana, if the lehenga in unstitched you can add the can-can. If it is already stitched then you might have to get it reopened and restitched to add a can can. against his depends not he cut and margins inside. If you can send me a pic i can probably suggest if it can be done or not. Also you can not purchase can can online. Not for lehengas at least

My lehnga has hard net. It initially didn’t have can-can but I got my tailor to put some in as the lehnga didn’t have any volume. Now I can’t sit with the lehnga. I am not sure if it’s the can-can or because the lehnga has heavy embroidery ? I didn’t try to sit with it when can-can was not in. (The lehnga was unstiched).
    What can be done ?
    Thanks

ideally you should inform the tailor to add the can-can only at the hem line, from about 4/6 inches! and have a pleated skirting effect! He must have added the can can from the knee length and hence when u try to sit it must be all pushing the garment upwards!
      hope this helps !

Hi, what type of can can should I have under the net lehenga?
Should I tell the tailor to attach can can to lehenga or wear it separately . Thanks

if the lehenga is flared then u can attache the can can with an extra layer of lining and give it a full bounce. But if the lehenga is a line I’m afraid u cant attach a can can under neath it will look weird with the flare. you cannot use a separate can can skirt underneath and lehenga generally has little slippage and it will look odd

    Hi AD,
I just wanted to know the height from which can can should to be stitched onto a lycra velvet lehenga of 5 mtrs ghera with a border of about 10-12 inches. I intend to wear it for a wedding, not mine though but since it would involve sitting at Gurudwara Sahib for Anand Karaj, would a detatchable skirt underneath the lehenga be advisable? And how much of can can would go for this kind of a lehenga, please consider that I do not have a petite frame, it’s more to the athletic side.

Hi. please advice the length of the skirt and i will suggest the length of the can-can. Also for the gurdwara wearing a detachable can can is not advisable. Its wont be possible for u to handle the same. LAo with a skirt if u do have a detachable can-can there will be a lot of slippage when u move around, this is because the waist of the skirt has a slippage when one moves. hope this helps

I brought a georgette lehenga with lakhnawi work. However, it is not in A shape. It asked the shopkeeper to add can can. He added from the knee. Now, the lehnga looks very odd, it is not uniform in the shape. I asked to remove can can, now kali of lehnga are overlapping one another. No flares in lehenga. They are saying it is not A-shape, it is kalidar lehnga but I am not liking it that way. Would adding can can from waist would help? Please suggest

adding a can-can is not as easy as it looks. it depends on the type and flair of the skirt. For a kalidar skirt, the can can should be ideal not sure why the shopkeeper is saying otherwise. many a time there are kalis but not in propotion to the waist and hips hence the flare reduces so the addition of can-can might look odd. Mostly lucknowi lehengas are made just randomly and always have the issue as the panels are either too wide or too thin. leading to problem.

I bought my bridal lehenga from lucknow…..it is very hard fabric….raw silk type….they attached two layers of can -can underneath it….now stiched….i wore it then the outer main lehenga fabric is standing separately nd no flares are there….its just making it heavy……should i remove both can-can??? Or just one???? Will it look odd? Can can is also hard net

can can i supposed to be a hard net. i guess you need to see a professional designer who can help you out. depending on the deviation from the flow of the lengha the can can needs to be fixed.
